This is the story of the great race horse, Exterminator. Affectionately known as Old Bones, he as born May 30, 1915, at the W.D. Knight farm, near Lexington, Kentucky. An unknown in 1918 he won the Kentucky Derby. He went on to become America’s top winner of cup races and, according to many experts, the greatest thoroughbred ever developed in this country. Exterminator retired in 1924, at the age of nine, when he pulled up lame in his 100th race. He died in 1945, at the ripe old age of thirty. Exterminator is buried on the Kilmer farm, near Binghamton, New York, beside his constant companion, the pony Peanuts II, and near his old stablemate, Sun Briar.

Before Secretariat, Citation, War Admiral, Seabiscuit and Man O'War, there was Exterminator, 1918 surprise Kentucky Derby winner and 1922 Horse of the Year. This big, goofy-looking chestnut gelding still holds the record for stakes wins by a North American thoroughbred (33) and was beloved throughout America.Originally published in 1955, this book is a fictionalized look at a magnificent racehorse, easy reading for all ages, with illustrations by Wesley Dennis. After the story, Exterminator's pedigree and career highlights and a number of photographs are included.
I first read this book as a child and finding it as an e-book brought back so many memories. What a wonderful book, and what a wonderful horse.

Old Bones the Wonder Horse Kentucky Derby Champion edition by Mildred Mastin Pace Children eBooks Reviews
Enjoyed
It was so great to read this again! My sister owned this book and then passed it along to me. A good story based on the true story of the thoroughbred, Exterminator.
I had this book when I was a child and rereading it brought back so many wonderful memories.
I had never heard of Old Bones (Exterminator) until I saw this book. I thought it was very well written, a good read about a very special horse with heart.
I read the original book many times when I was a kid. When I saw it listed here I just HAD to get it in form and reread it. Well worth doing so. Exterminator (Old Bones) was a thoroughly wonderful thoroughbred and I've always enjoyed his story. Underdogs don't always lose.
I first read this book when I was a kid and I was amazed then that the story of this incredible horse was not known. Here it is decades later and I'm still amazed. If you love horses and have even a mild interest in horse racing history, you need to read this book.
What an absolutely marvelous story about a truly exceptional horse! One of my tutoring students and I came to love this intelligent and gifted animal as we read through each page, rejoicing and mourning with him as events unfolded. Can a horse be keenly intelligent, kind, and generous? Read and find out!
